There is a long standing dispute between our state and Tamil Nadu on Hogenakkal. We had agreed to a joint survey to settle the territorial question. Before such a survey could take place, Tamil Nadu announced the drinking water project at Hogenakkal. For any project to take place, don’t you need approvals? Clearance from the environment ministry, the Centre?
Tamil Nadu obtained clearance from the Centre in 1998. Karnataka gave the go-ahead based on TN’s clearance of the Bangalore drinking water supply.
I am not aware of this. I don’t think that this is true.
Are you suggesting that Tamil Nadu went ahead without the Centre’s approval?
I am not aware of any clearance being granted.
There are official papers available... the NDA government was in power in 1998.
As far as I know, these are rumours created to mislead people and malign the BJP — where are the papers to prove this? Why isn’t the Centre producing this as evidence? If Tamil Nadu says it has all the documents, let them show it to us.

I only went there to understand the issue better.The controversy and the violence started with your visit.Did I make any inflammatory statements? I only went there and came back. Why did Karunanidhi react in that manner? It was unnecessary for him to talk the way he did. But I am against any tensions being created between the people of the two states.
So you are not responsibile for the violence in Bangalore?
I blame the UPA government for this mess now. They should call the representatives of both states and sit down for a discussion immediately. Instead they are just letting the controversy grow. Karnataka is under President’s Rule. The prime minister should call the governor and Karunanidhi.
You didn’t anticipate these kinds of reactions?
Do you ever know what lies in the future? Did Karunanidhi expect such a reaction? Of course I didn’t expect this.
Your visit seemed like it was an election gimmick.
Timing is not the issue. I will go anywhere to raise issues concerning the people of the state.
Why didn’t you visit the place earlier?
I didn’t go earlier because it was not an issue earlier. They laid the foundation stone (on February 26) without consultations and that’s how the controversy started.
Are you saying that you didn’t have the elections in mind?
That’s ridiculous. Remember that when I went, the elections hadn’t been announced.The dates weren’t, but everyone knew elections were in May, Election Commission had made clear statements...As far as I am concerned it could have been announced in September or October. To return to the issue, violence erupts every time tensions are created between the two states. In September 2007, Sangh Parivar activists torched a Tamil Nadu state bus and burnt alive two people.
This was after Karunanidhi’s statements, he should be conscious of the problems he creates. I don’t want to talk further about this.
